Eveliina Ala-Kulju 1867-1940
Eveliina Ala-Kulju was a Finnish schoolteacher, farmer’s wife and politician. She was a member of the Parliament of Finland from 1907 to 1910 and again from 1914 to 1919. She represented the Finnish Party until 1918 and the National Coalition Party from 1918 to 1919. Ala-Kulju was once one of Finland’s leading women and her oratory skills have been highlighted. In Parliament, Ala-Kulju became known as a good speaker and a thoroughly in-depth women’s representative. Ala-Kulju’s causes included Finnishness, temperance, improving the status of women, promoting home education and fostering the sanctity of the home.
Ala-Kulju was a member of the Agriculture and Education Committee and the Grand Committee of the Parliament. Her other positions of trust included membership of the Finnish Party’s additional party delegation and the SOK Children’s Home Board, as well as additional membership of the Women’s Committee of the Coalition Party.
